Awake in the Night
October 5, 2026 André K. Dugger
“I am awake through each watch of the night to meditate on your promise. In keeping with your faithful love, hear my voice. Lord, give me life in keeping with your justice. Those who pursue evil plans come near; they are far from your instruction.”
Psalm 119:148-150 (CSB)
The night can be a lonely place. When sleep won’t come and your mind races with thoughts, fears, or burdens, it’s easy to feel isolated. Yet, the psalmist transforms the long watches of the night into moments of deep communion with God. Instead of letting anxiety take control, he chooses meditation, fixing his heart on the promises of God.
The phrase “each watch of the night” refers to the divisions of time soldiers kept while standing guard. In that sense, the psalmist is spiritually “on watch,” alert and attentive to the Lord’s voice. You, too, are invited to use sleepless hours not as wasted time but as sacred space to draw near to God. When the world is silent, His Word speaks with clarity.
Notice that his prayer is not just for comfort, but for life; “Give me life in keeping with your justice.” He longs for the vitality that comes only from being right with God. He recognizes that real life - peaceful, purposeful, and secure - flows not from favorable circumstances but from God’s faithful love and righteous character.
Even as evil draws near, the psalmist finds safety in proximity to God’s Word. The wicked may be close in the physical sense, but spiritually, they are far from the truth that sustains him. You can take refuge in that same reality. When those around you act unjustly or plot harm, you don’t need to be overcome by fear. God’s justice and faithful love surround those who trust Him.
In the stillness of the night, when your heart feels restless, you can meditate on His promises and find strength. His Word will guard you better than sleep ever could.
Reflection Question: When worry or fear keeps you awake at night, do you turn your thoughts toward God’s promises and trust His justice to sustain you?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, when the night feels long and uncertainty presses in, teach me to meditate on your promises. Let your faithful love quiet my fears and your justice give me life and peace. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
