Life Through the Word
May 11, 2026 André K. Dugger
“If your instruction had not been my delight, I would have died in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for you have given me life through them. I am yours; save me, for I have studied your precepts. The wicked hope to destroy me, but I contemplate your decrees.”
Psalm 119:92-95 (CSB)
Affliction has a way of testing what you truly treasure. The psalmist confesses that if he had not found delight in God’s instruction, he would have perished under the weight of his suffering. In his pain, God’s Word became his refuge, his source of strength, and his means of life. When everything else crumbled, the unshakable truth of Scripture held him firm.
In seasons of trial, your heart has two options: despair or delight. Despair looks inward and sees only loss. Delight looks upward and finds hope in God’s Word. The psalmist’s survival wasn’t due to his strength but to the sustaining power of divine truth; “you have given me life through them.” God’s Word doesn’t merely inform you; it transforms and revives you from the inside out.
The psalmist’s cry, “I am yours; save me,” reveals the intimacy of his faith. He doesn’t appeal to his worthiness but to his belonging. You belong to God, and He is faithful to those who are His. In Christ, that truth is even more profound. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, you are not just created by God; you are redeemed, purchased, and sealed by His Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14).
Even as enemies plotted against him, the psalmist chose not to fix his eyes on his circumstances but on God’s decrees. That is the key to enduring faith: fixing your gaze on the eternal rather than the temporary. God’s Word does not eliminate affliction, but it sustains you through it. It teaches you that no suffering is wasted and that every hardship can become a testimony of His faithfulness.
When you root your life in Scripture, you discover that what once threatened to destroy you becomes the soil where your faith grows deeper.
Reflection Question: When you face hardship, how can you choose to delight in God’s Word rather than despair over your circumstances?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that Your Word gives life when I feel crushed by affliction. Help me to find my delight in Your truth and to remember that I belong to You. Strengthen my heart to trust You when trials come and let Your Word sustain me through every season. In Jesus name, Amen.
