Calling on the Lord from the Depths
September 21, 2026 André K. Dugger
“Trouble and distress have overtaken me, but your commands are my delight. Your decrees are righteous forever. Give me understanding, and I will live. I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord. I will obey your statutes. I call to you; save me, and I will keep your decrees.”
Psalm 119:143-146 (CSB)
There are moments when trouble seems to swallow you whole; when distress surrounds you so completely that you can’t see a way out. The psalmist understood that feeling well. Yet even in the darkest seasons, he found his delight not in circumstances changing, but in God’s commands. Why? Because the Word of God anchored him in truth when everything else felt unstable.
The psalmist declared, “Your decrees are righteous forever.” That means the same truth that sustained believers centuries ago is still sustaining you today. God’s righteousness does not waver. His promises do not expire. His faithfulness does not fluctuate with the storms of life.
In moments of desperation, you can follow the psalmist’s example: “I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord.” This is not a half-hearted plea; it’s the cry of total surrender. It’s what happens when you stop looking for solutions in your own strength and turn wholly to the One who has the power to save.
God hears the cries that rise from broken places. When you call to Him with all your heart, He not only answers; He teaches, strengthens, and revives. The psalmist prayed, “Give me understanding, and I will live.” He understood that spiritual life is found not merely in surviving hardship but in knowing and obeying God’s Word in the midst of it.
Affliction can draw you closer to God’s heart if you let it. Every cry for help becomes a declaration of faith; an acknowledgment that His Word is your life, your light, and your delight.
Reflection Question: When distress overtakes you, do you turn first to God’s Word for strength and call on Him with all your heart; or do you rely on your own understanding?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, when trouble and distress surround me, remind me that your Word is my delight and your righteousness endures forever. Teach me to call on you with all my heart and to trust that you will answer in your perfect way. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
