God is God, You Are Not

“But Joseph said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?’”
Genesis 50:19 (CSB)
Joseph’s words cut straight to the heart of a struggle you face more often than you realize; the temptation to step into a role that does not belong to you. After years of betrayal, injustice, and suffering at the hands of his own brothers, Joseph finally stood in a position of power. If anyone had a human reason to seek revenge, it was him. Yet instead of taking matters into his own hands, he asked a profound question: “Am I in the place of God?”
The implied answer is clear; no, he was not. Neither am I. And neither are you.
When someone wounds you, sins against you, or speaks falsely about you, something rises within you that demands justice. You may feel the urge to correct, repay, or even subtly punish. But in those moments, you are faced with a choice: will you trust God to be God, or will you attempt to take His place? I have faced this situation in my life, and so have you.
Joseph understood something that you must also learn; judgment belongs to God alone. He is perfectly just, perfectly wise, and perfectly aware of every motive and action. When you take justice into your own hands, you are stepping into a role you were never created to fill. Not only does this dishonor God, but it also burdens your heart with a weight you were never meant to carry.
Your responsibility is not to punish; it is to forgive.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean ignoring sin or pretending the hurt did not happen. It means releasing your claim to vengeance and entrusting the situation fully to God. It means choosing obedience over emotion, faith over control, and humility over pride. When you forgive, you aren’t excusing the offense; you are acknowledging that God is the rightful judge.
There is freedom in this surrender. When you stop trying to be God, you are finally able to rest in the fact that He already is. He sees. He knows. And He will act in His perfect timing and in His perfect way.
Like Joseph, you must come to the place where you can say, “I am not in the place of God.” And in that moment, you will find both peace and power; not in control, but in surrender.
Reflection Question: Where are you tempted to take God’s place by holding onto judgment instead of choosing forgiveness?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that You are God and I am not. Help me to release every desire for control, revenge, or judgment into Your hands. Teach me to forgive those who have hurt me, not because they deserve it, but because You have forgiven me. Give me the strength to trust Your justice and Your timing, even when it is difficult. Guard my heart from bitterness and fill me with peace as I walk in obedience to You. I surrender every offense to You today, trusting that You will handle all things perfectly. In Jesus name, Amen.
