Standing in Awe of the Righteous Judge
July 20, 2026 André K. Dugger
“I tremble in awe of you; I fear your judgments. I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors. Guarantee your servant’s well-being; do not let the arrogant oppress me.”
Psalm 119:120-122 (CSB)
The psalmist’s trembling before God is not the fear of terror; it is the fear of reverence. When you see God for who He truly is; the holy, righteous, and sovereign Judge, your heart can only respond with awe. This trembling is born not from dread but from deep respect, humility, and adoration. It is the posture of one who knows that God’s judgments are perfect and His justice unshakable.
In a world filled with injustice, lies, and oppression, this passage reminds you that righteousness begins with reverence. When you fear the Lord rightly, you learn to walk in integrity even when others do not. The psalmist could say, “I have done what is just and right,” not because he was sinless, but because his life was anchored in obedience to God’s Word. His confidence was not in his own merit but in God’s mercy and steadfast character.
When he prayed, “Do not leave me to my oppressors,” he was appealing to God’s faithfulness to protect those who walk uprightly. Likewise, you can cry out to God for His protection and deliverance, trusting that He will act according to His righteousness. You are never abandoned to the hands of the arrogant when you belong to Him.
The psalmist’s request, “Guarantee your servant’s well-being,” points to the assurance believers have in Christ. Jesus has secured your ultimate well-being through His finished work on the cross. He is your Advocate and Protector, ensuring that no oppression, trial, or enemy can separate you from God’s love.
To tremble before God is to live in the awareness that His holiness defines justice and that His mercy sustains your life. This awe produces not fear that drives you away; but faith that draws you nearer.
Reflection Question: How can a deeper reverence for God’s holiness help you live with greater integrity and trust amid injustice or opposition?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, teach me to tremble in holy awe before You. Let Your righteousness guide my steps and Your mercy secure my heart. Protect me from the schemes of the proud, and help me walk in what is just and right before You. In Jesus name, Amen.
