Provoked to Speak
June 23, 2026 André K. Dugger
“Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, ‘People of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect. For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed: To an Unknown God. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.’”
Acts 17:22-23(CSB)
Athens was a city full of brilliance, culture, and intellectual achievement; yet spiritually empty. As Paul walked its streets, Scripture says his spirit was “provoked within him.” He wasn’t impressed by the architecture or the philosophy; he was moved by the reality that people were worshiping everything except the one true God.
But notice what Paul does next. He doesn’t attack; he engages. He doesn’t withdraw; he steps forward. He meets people where they are, using their own culture, their own language, even their own poetry, to point them to truth.
Paul saw an altar “To an Unknown God,” and instead of condemning it, he used it as a bridge.
This is a powerful reminder for us. We live in a world not unlike Athens; full of ideas, beliefs, and spiritual confusion. The question is not whether culture is lost; the question is whether we are willing to engage it.
Too often, we either blend in or back away. But Paul shows us a better way; to stand firm in truth while stepping forward in love.
You don’t need a stage to proclaim truth. You simply need awareness, boldness, and a heart that sees people the way God sees them.
Reflection Question: Where has God placed you to be a voice of truth in a culture that may not yet know Him?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, give me eyes to see the spiritual needs around me and a heart that is moved the way Yours is. Help me to engage others with both truth and grace, never compromising Your Word but always reflecting Your love. Use my life as a bridge that points others to You. In Jesus name, Amen.
