Praise in the Midst of Affliction
June 22, 2026 André K. Dugger
“I am severely afflicted; Lord, give me life according to your word. Lord, please accept my freewill offerings of praise, and teach me your judgments. My life is constantly in danger, yet I do not forget your instruction. The wicked have set a trap for me, but I have not wandered from your precepts.”
Psalms 119:107-110 (CSB)
Affliction has a way of testing the depth of your devotion and the sincerity of your praise. When life is easy, it’s not difficult to sing of God’s goodness. But when you are “severely afflicted,” as the psalmist describes, when your heart is heavy and your circumstances dark, that’s when the true foundation of your faith is revealed.
In this passage, the psalmist does not ask for immediate deliverance but for life according to God’s word. He longs not just for relief from suffering, but for spiritual vitality; to be renewed by God’s promises even in pain. This is the mark of mature faith: desiring God’s truth more than temporary comfort.
Notice also that his affliction doesn’t silence his worship. He offers freewill offerings of praise to the Lord, a voluntary sacrifice flowing from a heart that still trusts God’s goodness. True worship is never about your feelings; it’s about your faith. When you praise God in suffering, your worship becomes a declaration of trust that transcends circumstance.
Even as his enemies set traps and danger looms, the psalmist remains steadfast. “I do not forget your instruction,” he says. He chooses obedience over fear and faithfulness over escape. When you hold tightly to God’s Word in your trials, you find stability the world cannot offer. His Word becomes both your compass and your comfort.
No suffering is wasted when it drives you closer to the heart of God. Affliction refines your faith, deepens your praise, and transforms your dependence. When everything else is uncertain, His Word remains your lifeline, your source of strength, courage, and hope.
Reflection Question: When affliction comes, do you allow it to silence your praise; or do you let it deepen your dependence on God’s Word and your devotion to His truth?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, when affliction surrounds me, give me life according to Your Word. Accept my praise even in my pain and teach me to trust You more deeply through every trial. In Jesus name, Amen.
