Righteous Anger and a Holy God
September 7, 2026 André K. Dugger
“You are righteous, Lord, and your judgments are just. The decrees you issue are righteous and altogether trustworthy. My anger overwhelms me because my foes forget your words.”
Psalm 119:137-139 (CSB)
The psalmist begins with worship; declaring the righteousness and justice of the Lord. Before expressing his frustration or pain, he centers his heart on who God is. That’s where your response to injustice must begin; not with the brokenness of the world, but with the holiness of God.
God’s righteousness is absolute. His judgments are not swayed by opinion, emotion, or culture. They are “altogether trustworthy.” When you see wickedness prosper, deceit exalted, or truth mocked, it’s natural to feel anger; but the psalmist shows that holy anger is born from reverence. His outrage was not self-centered; it was grief over people forgetting God’s Word.
There’s a difference between human anger and holy indignation. Human anger seeks revenge or vindication. Holy indignation flows from love for God and compassion for those who dishonor Him. Jesus Himself demonstrated this when He cleansed the temple; not in rage, but in zeal for His Father’s house (John 2:17).
In a world that increasingly rejects God’s truth, you will feel this tension. You’ll watch people dismiss what is sacred, distort what is good, and deny what is righteous. Yet even then, your response must reflect the character of the God you serve. Your anger must lead you to prayer, not pride; to intercession, not bitterness.
Let your zeal for God’s truth burn brightly, but let it be tempered by His grace. Remember, He is righteous and just, and He will make all things right in His time. Until then, your task is to stay faithful; to keep declaring His truth, living His Word, and trusting His perfect judgments.
Reflection Question: When you see others reject or distort God’s truth, does your response reflect His holiness; driving you to pray, to stand for truth, and to trust His righteous justice?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, your judgments are true and pure. Help me to honor you when I see your Word forgotten. Let my anger be holy; rooted in love for you and compassion for others. Keep my heart steadfast in your truth. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
