Sustained by His Promise
July 13, 2026 André K. Dugger
“Sustain me as you promised, and I will live; do not let me be ashamed of my hope. Sustain me so that I can be safe and always be concerned about your statutes. You reject all who stray from your statutes, for their deceit is a lie. You remove all the wicked on earth as if they were dross from metal; therefore, I love your decrees.”
Psalm 119:116-119 (CSB)
This passage reveals the psalmist’s complete dependence on the sustaining power of God’s Word. He understands that life; true, enduring, spiritual life, comes not from human strength but from divine support. When you cry out, “Sustain me as you promised,” you are acknowledging that apart from God’s sustaining grace, your faith would falter and your hope would fade.
Hope in God’s promises will never leave you ashamed. The world may mock your faith, but God always keeps His Word. Every promise He has made finds its fulfillment in Christ, the One who sustains you daily through His Spirit. When you depend on Him, you are not just surviving; you are being strengthened to live faithfully, even in times of hardship or uncertainty.
The psalmist also reminds you that God’s Word not only sustains but also purifies. He removes the wicked “as if they were dross from metal.” Dross is the impurity that rises to the surface during refining, and it must be removed for the metal to be pure and strong. In the same way, God refines His people through His Word; burning away deceit, pride, and other sin, so that your faith becomes steadfast and your love for His truth deepens.
To love God’s decrees means to welcome His refining work, even when it is painful. The psalmist doesn’t just endure discipline; he embraces it, knowing that it leads to purity of heart and strength of faith.
As you walk with God, His Word sustains you, shapes you, and refines you. In His promises, you find the life and hope that no trial can extinguish.
Reflection Question: How has God and God’s Word sustained and refined you through seasons of testing or difficulty?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, sustain me by Your promise and strengthen me to live faithfully before You. Refine my heart through Your Word, remove anything impure, and keep my hope steadfast in You and Your truth. In Jesus name, Amen.
